Leonardo da Vinci, artist and investigator
Leonardo da Vinci was more than a painter: he worked as an engineer and investigator of nature, filled notebooks with studies of anatomy, mechanics, geometry, and other subjects, wrote, and made and played musical instruments such as the lyre. Calling him an “outstanding mathematician” without qualification would overstate the evidence: he used mathematics and geometry in his work but was not a professional mathematician in the modern sense.
