In an unfinished autobiography, Kazimir Malevich recalled observing folk painting in Ukrainian villages as a child and trying to transfer ornaments onto stoves and walls himself. He also wrote that his mother practiced embroidery and lace-making, and that he learned these crafts from her. Scholars connect this experience to his sensitivity to geometric forms, but do not reduce the origins of Suprematism to a single source.
