Are Obama and Romney related?

During the 2012 U.S. presidential election, a claim circulated online that Barack Obama and Mitt Romney were distant relatives. However, I could not find a reliable independent study with a documented family tree confirming a shared ancestor between the two. Ancestry published separate research about each candidate’s ancestry, but that does not prove a relationship between them. The claim should therefore be treated as unverified.
