During Columbia’s STS-73 flight in October–November 1995, small potato tubers formed in the ASTROCULTURE facility. This was an important microgravity tuber-formation experiment, but the potato was not the first plant ever grown in space. Arabidopsis had already flowered and produced seeds aboard Salyut 7 in 1982. Any “first” needs a specific category, such as tubers, a vegetable crop or a complete life cycle.
