The Colossus of Rhodes
The Colossus of Rhodes was a bronze statue of the sun god Helios and one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. Ancient descriptions give its height as about 70 cubits—roughly 33 m—though its exact appearance and location remain unknown. It stood for only a few decades before an earthquake toppled it around 226–225 BCE. The familiar image of the Colossus straddling the harbor entrance is a later legend without archaeological support.
