What Mammoth Remains Can Tell Scientists
Permafrost has preserved some mammoth remains with hair, skin, and internal tissues. In some specimens, digestive-tract contents help researchers study diet; genetic material from frozen remains helps investigate mammoth evolution. Preservation varies between finds—an intact mammoth with untouched food is not typical of every specimen.
