The spotted hyena’s laugh-like “giggle” is a vocal signal, not evidence that the animal is amused. Acoustic analysis found that it can carry cues about the caller’s age, identity, and dominant or subordinate status. However, the study did not establish that other hyenas always recognize or use these cues.
