Sharks belly-up
The claim that sharks never turn belly-up and then fall into a coma is an overstatement. In many—but not all—sharks, inversion can trigger reversible tonic immobility: movement and responsiveness decrease, but the fish continues breathing. This is not an ordinary coma but a temporary response used by researchers during brief procedures.
Inversion can trigger temporary immobility in some sharks.
