UNESCO dates Göbekli Tepe’s monumental structures to approximately 9600–8200 BCE. Pillars and their decoration indicate complex communal and ritual life. The site cannot, however, be treated as the proven beginning of all religion or evidence of precisely identified gods: archaeologists interpret material traces rather than reading these communities’ recorded doctrines.
