Atmospheric Pressure and Ear Popping

Atmospheric pressure is higher near sea level because a larger column of air lies above the point; with altitude, fewer air molecules remain overhead and pressure falls. During a rapid altitude change, such as in an aircraft or on a mountain road, outside pressure changes faster than pressure in the middle ear. The Eustachian tube equalizes the difference, and until it does, a person may feel ear fullness or discomfort. The sensation depends on the rate of pressure change and individual factors.
