Наполеон народився на Корсиці після переходу острова під владу Франції

Napoleon Bonaparte was born in Ajaccio, Corsica, on August 15, 1769. A year earlier, on May 15, 1768, Genoa transferred its rights over the island to France under the Treaty of Versailles; French control was established amid military events in 1768–1769.

So the claim that he “would have been Italian” had he been born a year earlier is catchy but imprecise. Before the transfer, Corsica was under Genoese sovereignty, but “Italian” in the modern national sense is anachronistic: a unified Italy emerged much later. More precisely, Napoleon was born in Corsica after its transfer to France, during a political transition on the island.
