Guatemala’s Indigenous languages
Guatemala officially recognizes 22 Mayan languages, as well as Xinka and Garifuna; Spanish is the official language. According to 2018 census data, about 30% of the population had a Mayan language as its mother tongue. The roughly 40% figure comes from an older general reference and is not a current estimate of the share of language speakers.
