Is Time a Human Invention?

Time in physics is not merely a human convention for organizing daily life: it appears in models, equations, and measurements, and relativity describes physical time intervals that depend on motion and gravity. Yet the nature of time and its arrow remain debated in the philosophy of physics. Many fundamental equations are approximately symmetric under reversing time, while macroscopic processes such as melting ice have a statistical direction associated with increasing entropy. Reversing the real world is not simply turning a clock backward; it would require restoring the extraordinarily precise state of all interactions.
