At the 1904 Saint Louis Olympic marathon, Fred Lorz arrived at the stadium first after traveling partway by car. He was disqualified and Thomas Hicks became the official winner. Olympedia lists 32 participants and 14 classified finishers. Heat, dust and inadequate water made the race punishing; arriving first is not equivalent to winning legitimately.
