Mars Is Not a Perfect Sphere

Mars is slightly flattened at the poles, and the massive Tharsis volcanic region also contributes to triaxial deviations in its shape. Cartography uses ellipsoidal reference models; common reference radii are about 3,396 km at the equator and 3,376 km near the poles. The rugby-ball comparison is figurative, not a precise model of the planet’s shape.

Synthetic illustration of Mars’s shape; deviations are exaggerated.
