ATMs that heated banknotes

In the 1990s, Japan introduced ATMs that heated and pressed banknotes before dispensing them. A 1994 newspaper report said the rollers heated notes to 392 °F (200 °C) to reduce certain bacteria. A Hitachi patent describes a banknote sterilizing heater with a roller temperature of 160–240 °C. This was a historical feature of particular machines, not a confirmed feature of modern ATMs in Japan.
