Four Elements Named After Ytterby
Yttrium, terbium, erbium, and ytterbium are named after the Swedish village of Ytterby. A mineral from the local quarry led nineteenth-century chemists to isolate several rare-earth elements. More precisely, the elements and corresponding oxides were identified through work on quarry samples; they were not all “discovered” simultaneously at one spot.
