A rule for monks in the Pali Vinaya prohibits intentionally taking a living being’s life. The text distinguishes intention from an unintentional event and is not limited to large animals. It is a norm in a particular canon rather than proof of perfect behavior by every monk throughout history or identical discipline in all Buddhist schools.
