In ancient China, before round coins became widespread, people used bronze money shaped like spades and knives. These pieces recalled familiar tools but were cast as means of exchange; they were generally smaller and lighter than working implements. Different states and cities issued their own types. Their shapes show how a monetary object can retain the outline of a useful item even when it is no longer used in a field or kitchen.
