India’s linguistic diversity
India has exceptional linguistic diversity, but counts depend on how a language is distinguished from a mother tongue or dialect. India’s 2011 census groups data into 121 languages and 270 mother tongues, while Ethnologue has listed 447 living languages. The claim that a single person is now the sole speaker of one of them could not be reliably verified.
