Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis converts light energy into chemical energy. In plants, chlorophyll and other pigments in chloroplasts absorb light; water and carbon dioxide take part in reactions that build carbohydrates, while oxygen is released as a by-product. Photosynthetic organisms underpin many food webs, although not every food chain begins directly with a plant.
