Speech rides on the exhale

Ordinary speech is produced mostly on exhalation: airflow from the lungs sets the vocal folds vibrating. People usually pause to inhale, but it is too absolute to say that no sound can be made while breathing in; rare ingressive sounds and special vocal techniques exist.

Speech usually rides the exhale, with inhalations between phrases.
