Parchment and medieval manuscripts

In medieval Europe, manuscript pages were often made from prepared calf, sheep, or goat skin—parchment. A large codex could require many hides: an estimate for the nearly complete Codex Sinaiticus is about 200 carefully selected skins. Before printing became widespread, books were copied by hand; some were illuminated with miniatures, making production labor-intensive and costly.
