Roman Christian catacombs were primarily underground cemeteries. They relate to remembrance of the dead and martyrs, but the popular image of entire persecuted communities constantly worshipping there secretly is unsupported. Tomb visits and funerary rites should not automatically be equated with routine parish services or living in hiding.
