Historical customs of tooth modification
Intentional dental modification has historically been practiced in different societies, including removing or filing front teeth for reasons associated with adulthood rites, aesthetics, or group identity. But no reliable evidence was found for the specific claim that a husband had to knock out his bride’s two teeth on their wedding night. Practices from particular communities should not be generalized to “African tribes.”
Historical practices varied; the specific wedding ritual is unverified.
