ICZN identifies Carl Linnaeus as the lectotype of Homo sapiens, designated by William Stearn in 1959. This does not mean Linnaeus appointed lectotypes for every species he described or selected himself during his lifetime. A name-bearing type anchors the application of a scientific name; it is not the most average human, everyone’s genetic ancestor or a standard of human worth.
