Papua New Guinea’s linguistic diversity

Papua New Guinea has more living languages than any other country. Ethnologue counts about 840 living languages there. That is more than 10% of the world’s 7,000-plus living languages; “over 12%” depends on an older or narrower global denominator and is not a stable exact share. Counts vary with how sources distinguish languages from dialects.
