Why chameleons change color

Chameleons can change color, but they do not instantly switch to any background color. Color change plays roles in signaling between individuals and thermoregulation; the contribution of camouflage depends on the species and situation. Many chameleons are already camouflaged by their natural coloration, so “they change color just to hide from predators” is an oversimplification. [1–3]

Chameleon color change can aid signaling and temperature regulation.
