A frequently repeated claim says that the world has seen only 235 years without war in the past 3,500 years. This is not a precise, universally accepted count; it depends on what qualifies as a war, a “peaceful year,” and which regions and sources are included.
For example, a British Historical Association article repeats an estimate of about 230 years of peace in 3,500 years, but does not provide a transparent counting method. Modern conflict datasets also report results only within their defined scope: they record armed conflicts according to thresholds, not every war worldwide throughout all of history. It is therefore more accurate to call 235 years a popular rough estimate, not a verified global fact.
