How fruit popularity is measured
Tree with red apples 'Särsö' in Barkedal, Lysekil Municipality, Sweden. The apples ripened early and were unusually red on the side facing south and the camera, caused by the uncharacteristically many hours of sunlight during the hot summer of 2018.. Apples and oranges are among the world’s widely available fruits, but saying they always rank first and second depends on how “popular” is measured. Production, exports, per-capita availability, and actual consumption produce different rankings; in global production, bananas have ranked ahead of apples and oranges.
