How many muscles make a smile?
The claim that smiling uses 53 muscles has no reliable anatomical basis. A smile results from coordinated facial-muscle activity; the zygomaticus major is key to lifting the mouth corners, while different kinds of smiles can recruit other muscles, including those around the eyes. There is no sound universal muscle count for every smile.
Different smiles involve different combinations of muscle movements.
