During dives, many seals slow their heart rate, a response called bradycardia. Together with the narrowing of some blood vessels, it reduces the heart’s workload and helps conserve limited oxygen stores while maintaining delivery to the brain and heart. The response depends on dive duration and conditions: in freely diving northern elephant seals, heart rate fell more during longer dives.
