Сюзанна Солтер: жартівлива кандидатура, справжня перемога

In 1887, Susanna Madora Salter became the first woman mayor in the United States, leading Argonia, Kansas. Men nominated her as a joke intended to embarrass the local temperance movement and women’s participation in politics. But Salter won, receiving about two-thirds of the vote.

The popular version that she discovered her candidacy only inside the voting booth does not match the Kansas Historical Society’s account. Early voters saw her name on the ballot; Republicans visited Salter at home while she was doing laundry and asked whether she would serve if elected. She agreed, and voters backed her.
