Single-celled organisms can die, and binary fission does not make every cell immortal. A 2005 Escherichia coli experiment found that cells inheriting an older pole grew more slowly on average and had a greater chance of death. Apparently symmetrical division need not be functionally symmetrical. This concerns a particular bacterium and conditions, rather than one aging pattern shared by all microorganisms.
