Religious institutions formed an important setting for many early centers of learning, but their histories differ. Oxford has no clear founding date, with teaching documented from at least 1096. Cambridge traces its beginning to scholars migrating from Oxford in 1209. Describing both simply as founded at monasteries therefore oversimplifies their development.
