A banana is not a palm: its apparent trunk is a pseudostem made of tightly packed leaf sheaths. It is a large herbaceous plant in Musaceae. Bamboos, by contrast, belong to the grass family Poaceae, although many have woody stems. Giant species such as Dendrocalamus giganteus can reach tens of meters; this is not every bamboo’s height, nor does it make bananas members of the grass family.
