Early moving images in Odesa

Two short subjects became part of early cinema history.

Listen to fact0:00 / —

In 1893, Odesa mechanic Yosyp Tymchenko and engineer Mykola Freidenberg built a device that moved film intermittently to capture moving images. It was used to shoot two short subjects, The Horseman and The Spear Thrower. Sources differ on when the first screenings took place; the device belongs to early cinema history but does not by itself establish a single global “first inventor.”
