The tricorne, or cocked hat, became common men’s headwear in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Turning up the broad brim showed off a wig and made the hat easier to carry indoors. Women also sometimes wore tricornes, including for hunting; the story that writers mocked them as “Amazons” is not supported by the museum sources consulted.
