Altered Perception Underwater

At depth while breathing compressed air, high nitrogen partial pressure can cause nitrogen narcosis: altered perception, sometimes euphoria, but also confusion and impaired judgment. At high altitude, reduced oxygen (hypoxia) can affect memory, attention, and coordination, sometimes producing a feeling of well-being. These are different mechanisms and potentially dangerous physiological states—not literal intoxication by air. [1–3]

Depth and altitude can impair judgment through different physiological mechanisms.
