Some salamanders live without lungs: they are amphibians, rather than lizard reptiles. Adult Plethodontidae exchange gases through skin and oral surfaces. A 2022 study found transient lung rudiments in their embryos that subsequently regressed. This does not support the original story about lizards losing lungs after returning to the sea.
