A little wonder, every day

Fig priority is a hypothesis, not a settled ranking

Charred fig remains from Gilgal I in the Jordan Valley are over eleven thousand years old. A 2006 study proposed that they came from trees propagated using planted branches and interpreted them as very early domestication. Other researchers challenged whether the fruits necessarily establish cultivation. Figs should therefore not be called the indisputably first crop, nor should all early cereal cultivation be dated only to the sixth millennium BCE.
