When a cat rubs its cheek or body against a person, it may be both a friendly greeting and a way to leave a scent signal. Cats have scent glands, including on their cheeks; rubbing helps convey olfactory information and may signal familiarity. So the behavior is not only affection, but it does not literally mean the cat “owns” the person either: rubbing is also part of social interaction.
