Sea monsters on old maps

Some medieval and Renaissance maps populated the seas with monsters and fantastical creatures. Such images could reflect contemporary ideas about nature and the dangers of distant waters, mark the limits of known geography, or simply decorate a map and fill open space. Not every monster was a warning, and not all came from real encounters with whales or squid; their meaning depended on the period and the particular map.
