the largest enclosed water body

The Caspian Sea is the world’s largest inland body of water and, under the lake classification, the largest lake. Despite its name, it is an endorheic basin with no natural connection to the World Ocean. The coastal states have a dedicated convention on its legal status, so in international law the name “sea” is not reducible to a simple lake-versus-ocean-coast distinction.
