Around 1700, Italian maker Bartolomeo Cristofori built the first true piano. A 1700 Medici inventory described it as Cristofori’s new keyboard instrument, with hammers and dampers. In 1711, Scipione Maffei called it a “harpsichord with soft and loud,” giving rise to the name pianoforte.
