Herostratus and the Temple of Artemis
The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus burned in 356 BCE; ancient writers associated the arson with Herostratus and reported that he sought to immortalize his name. This motive comes from the ancient tradition, not independent testimony from the arsonist himself. Despite an attempt to erase his name from memory, it survived in historical texts and became a byword for fame gained through destruction.
The temple’s ruins preserve the memory of Herostratus and one story of Ephesus.
