The film *Cloud Atlas* (2012), directed by Lana Wachowski, Lilly Wachowski and Tom Tykwer, adapts David Mitchell’s novel of the same name. The novel’s six stories unfold in different eras and echo one another through characters, texts and recurring motifs. A comet-shaped birthmark and themes of rebirth can suggest reincarnation, but this motif does not explain every connection or rule out other readings of the novel. [1–5]
