A little wonder, every day

Why Columbia submarines do not share one identical price

The U.S. Navy plans 12 Columbia-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines. A 2024 GAO report cited roughly $130 billion to acquire the class; this is a dated program estimate, rather than an identical price for every submarine. The original $15.03 billion-per-unit claim should not be assigned to all 12 vessels without separating the cost categories. Development, the lead hull and follow-on ships can have different budgets. Submarine-fleet needs helped drive early satellite navigation, but this does not mean the Columbia program created GPS.
