A little wonder, every day

Terrafugia Transition

AI-generated cover: a generic two-seat roadable aircraft with wings folded near a hangar. Not a product photograph or exact rendering of the Terrafugia Transition. Prompt: “Photorealistic editorial cover for a story about a roadable aircraft: a compact two-seat light aircraft parked at an airport roadside hangar with its wings neatly folded beside the body, vertical 4:5, clean daylight. Generic illustrative aircraft, not an exact Terrafugia Transition product rendering; no brand marks, readable text, or claim to show a production vehicle.” Generated 2026-10-19.
AI-generated generic experimental roadable aircraft while anonymous technicians fold its wings; not the actual Terrafugia prototype. Prompt: “Photorealistic editorial reconstruction of a small two-seat experimental aircraft inside a bright hangar while technicians fold its wings for road mode, generic vehicle, anonymous workers, vertical 4:5. Do not depict the exact Terrafugia prototype or any real person; no company logos or legible text.” Generated 2026-10-19.
AI-generated generic roadable aircraft traveling on a road after its wings are folded; not evidence of actual road approval or a Terrafugia road test. Prompt: “Photorealistic editorial image of a generic small roadable aircraft being driven slowly on a quiet public road after its wings have folded, viewed from behind at a safe distance, rural road, vertical 4:5. Conceptual illustration only, not an actual Terrafugia Transition road test or certification evidence, no logos or readable text.” Generated 2026-10-19.

Commons caption identifies a SciFoo 2008 display, but embedded camera metadata gives 20 August 2005; the exact date/event is uncertain, so the image is used only to show the aircraft, not as date evidence. The Terrafugia Transition is a two-seat aircraft with a road mode: its wings fold so it can be driven on roads after a flight. At the 2012 New York auto show, an expected price of about $279,000 was announced; this was a quoted price, not proof of a completed sale. In 2021, the FAA issued the initial version an airworthiness certificate for flight, while the company said it still planned to bring the road version into compliance for driving. A flight certificate by itself did not mean the aircraft was already approved for road use.
