Tectonic plates and geological events
Earth’s rigid outer shell—the lithosphere, made of the crust and uppermost mantle—is divided into moving plates. They move over the hotter, ductile asthenosphere in the upper mantle. Plate interactions produce most earthquakes and much of Earth’s volcanism, especially near plate boundaries, though intraplate earthquakes and volcanoes also occur, as in Hawaii.
Plate motion shapes many earthquakes and volcanic zones, though not every volcano.
